README ¶
pretty-print
A CLI utility for transforming XML and JSON into a human readable format.
Example Usage
By default pretty-print
will take data from stdin
, auto-detect + format it as either XML or JSON, and write the result to stdout
.
In this example, we are using wget
to fetch JSON data, piping it to pretty print, and redirecting the formatted results to a file:
wget -qO - https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/users | pretty-print > users.json
CLI Options
pretty-print --help
Usage of ./pretty-print:
-c Clipboard mode. Output will also be copied to the clipboard. If stdin is connected to terminal then the current clipboard contents are formatted.
-i int
Indent. Number of spaces that each depth level should be formatted with. (default 2)
-n Desktop notifications. Push desktop notifications on success/failure.
Adjusting the indent (-i
) to 4 spaces instead of the default 2 spaces:
pretty-print -i 4 < users.json > users-more-indent.json
When using clipboard mode (-c
) the results will also be copied to your clipboard:
pretty-print -c < users.json
If stdin is connected to the terminal (ie no pipe/redirected data), clipboard mode (-c
) will format your current clipboard's contents:
pretty-print -c
If using this on a keyboard shortcut with clipboard mode (-c
), enable desktop notifications (-n
) for a heads up if the formatting fails:
pretty-print -c -n
Formatting Examples
With an input JSON string that looks like this:
{"glossary":{"title":"example glossary","GlossDiv":{"title":"S","GlossList":{"GlossEntry":{"ID":"SGML","SortAs":"SGML","GlossTerm":"Standard Generalized Markup Language","Acronym":"SGML","Abbrev":"ISO 8879:1986","GlossDef":{"para":"A meta-markup language, used to create markup languages such as DocBook.","GlossSeeAlso":["GML","XML"]},"GlossSee":"markup"}}}}}
Running the program with the default indent (2 spaces) will produce output that looks like this:
{
"glossary": {
"GlossDiv": {
"GlossList": {
"GlossEntry": {
"Abbrev": "ISO 8879:1986",
"Acronym": "SGML",
"GlossDef": {
"GlossSeeAlso": [
"GML",
"XML"
],
"para": "A meta-markup language, used to create markup languages such as DocBook."
},
"GlossSee": "markup",
"GlossTerm": "Standard Generalized Markup Language",
"ID": "SGML",
"SortAs": "SGML"
}
},
"title": "S"
},
"title": "example glossary"
}
}
With input XML that looks like this:
